About the programme

The NPQML is a qualification that provides national recognition of your leadership development and professional achievement as an aspiring or existing middle leader. A National College for Teaching and Leadership course and part of their leadership curriculum, it has been successfully run by the Leadership and Training Centre with primary and secondary schools across Milton Keynes for the last few years. Under licence from the Thames Valley School Partnership this course is being offered by the Leadership and Training Centre at Shenley Brook End School on behalf of Denbigh Teaching School Alliance and Milton Keynes Teaching School Alliance.

Who is it for?

The NPQML is designed for those middle leaders who have, or are building, their experience in a middle leadership post in educational establishments. This experience varies across all organisations, but should equate to having departmental, team or phase leadership responsibility. For those who are ready for middle leadership, you need to demonstrate effective experience of work alongside an established middle leader in school, for example, working as second in a team/department, or undertaking a middle leader project in school.

This programme is an important step on the route towards senior leadership for those aiming at that level. It will also be vital to enhancing the skills and experience of well-established career middle leaders who can provide important role models for less experienced teachers.

What criteria make you eligible for the programme?

In applying for the NPQML with Thames Valley Schools Partnership, we ask you to address the following criteria: A statement of experience of your middle leadership role(s) 1. A supporting statement from your Headteacher supporting your readiness for this level of development 2. A supporting statement from your Headteacher supporting your readiness for this level of development 3. The ability to cover the cost of the programme, either personally or through your school.

Programme Delivery

The programme lasts between 12 and 18 months. Each module has an expectation of around 50 hours of work, including up to 2 face-to-face days, online study, collaborative work and school-based work. Modules are likely to last up to a term in length, with your school project running throughout. It is expected that you engage with a school-based coach to support your development.

Assessment The programme is assessed externally through a single piece of work, based on the application of your learning to a school-based project.
