Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Training

Higher Level Teaching Assistants are a valuable teaching asset in all phases and sectors of education.

By undertaking HLTA preparation and assessment, teaching assistants meet national standards in terms of working alongside teachers to support students in the classroom. HLTAs plan and deliver learning sessions with individual students, small groups of children and can provide short-term cover for whole classes. HLTAs can be spread throughout a variety of classes, taking small groups of children who may be having problems within the larger group. Many of them have specialist skills such as Art or Sports and are involved in working with the teacher to help lead the subject.

This course is suitable for experienced TAs who would like to develop their role and support students in a wider variety of ways. To be eligible for HLTA assessment, course participants must have a GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics. During preparation, participants will be supported in completing assignments to create a folder of evidence to show that they meet the 33 standards required for HLTA assessment. To support course participants in achieving HLTA status, the school should provide a coach who will work with the participant to facilitate the teaching experiences that are needed to create evidence for assessment and to guide participants around completion of the course assignments.

Following completion of HLTA preparation, an HLTA assessor will arrange to visit the course participants’ school to observe the candidate and discuss their work with line managers in their school. The assessment visit takes half a day.
