Aims & Ethos

Denbigh School provides an outstanding educational experience for around 1400, 11 to 19 students on the Western Flank of Milton Keynes.  We are recognised by Ofsted as an outstanding school and are a Convertor Academy which offers us the independence and resources to be innovative and react quickly to change.

Our ethos is to create a culture of success to extend lifetime opportunities for young people and everything we do fuels this ambition. We foster high aspirations and a culture of life-long learning which we hope will stay with our students into adult life.

Denbigh School is committed to ensuring that British values are fostered and underpin our practice both in the classroom and beyond.  Consequently, students explore spirituality and whilst doing so develop their knowledge and tolerance of other beliefs.  We help to nurture a clear understanding of right from wrong and highlight the consequences of unlawful actions according to British law, whilst clarifying its differences to religious law.  Moral and ethical dilemmas are frequently discussed and students are encouraged to construct reasoned arguments.

Our students are provided with an array of opportunities to reap the rewards of our richly diverse community - they are taught to celebrate difference, resolve conflict and develop understanding of other cultures.  Whilst students grow and flourish as individuals they also contribute to the world beyond the confines of Denbigh; in doing so they recognise that British citizenship involves making creative and positive contributions to society.

We were one of the first schools in the country to be awarded the prestigious Teaching School status.  Our Teaching School status recognises that we are among the best schools in the country in terms of raising standards, both within our School and in the Schools we support.  We have also been accredited as a SCITT provider, which in partnership with other schools in Milton Keynes, will allow us from September 2015 to offer ‘school based’ training for new recruits to the teaching profession.
We were delighted this year to be selected as one of only 32 schools nationally to become a Lead School for one of the new ‘Maths Hubs’ set up under a government programme to improve the teaching of maths for students across the country.

We have a track record of delivering academic success in subjects which offer students a real currency to progress into higher education or employment.  As a School we consistently outperform the Milton Keynes and national averages in terms of the results our students achieve.  This academic success is built on the supportive, well-disciplined and dynamic learning environment we provide, which enables our students to focus on their studies.

We are committed to providing an outstanding all-round educational experience for our students which combines academic excellence with exciting extra-curricular and sporting activities.  Our sports teams were undefeated in 64% of their sporting fixtures last year.  We also have a large number of students competing at a regional or national level in their sporting fields.  Our students benefit from the excellent sporting facilities shared with Shenley Leisure Centre, adjacent to the School.

We also have a strong performing arts culture at the School with many opportunities for our students to develop and showcase their talents through school productions, events and national and regional competitions.

We are committed to having a healthy school environment for both students and staff.  We believe that for a School to succeed there needs to be a genuine spirit of partnership between students, the School and parents.

We have a thriving Sixth Form of approximately 400 students, which combines the very highest of academic standards with a wide range of enrichment, social and sporting activities.

We are innovative in how we work with the community and business to the benefit of our students.  We work with local and national employers.  We are also part of the Youthbridge Scheme, a British German Association to promote German learning and culture in British schools.

Our aim, which remains constant as the world of education evolves, is to offer our students the very best chance of academic success and to help them develop into well rounded, confident and secure young people.
